Our luck with the weather has been holding so far. It has been cool, overcast, and windy, but we didn't have any real rain that influenced our activities.
In the morning, we weren't sure how long the weather would last, so we played a whole camp outdoor game called Happy Happy Joy Joy. There is a hula hoop at each end of the field with an object inside it. A rope on the ground divides the field in half. The object of the game is for one team to run to the other end of the field and catch the object in the hula hoop. However, if a team member is in the other team's area, they can be tagged. If they get tagged, they have to squat down until they are rescued by another team member.
For our second activity period, the Sigmas of Ohio (Yellow team or 7th graders) had ecology. They got a brief lesson on leaf morphology and then the got to go out and find real-world samples of the different shapes. The Waves (Blue Team or 6th graders) went river tracing. They were a bit skeptical at first, but the water wasn't really that cold, and it seemed like everyone had fun.
In the afternoon, the Waves had ecology. They are a different grade, so they have a different program. They got to learn about some of the insects and animals around camp. They then went out to see how many varieties they could find. They found a lot of tadpoles among other things. The Sigmas of Ohio had archery.
For our final period, we had another whole camp game. This one is called Rainbow Tag. Campers are given colored bandanas, which they hang from their pockets. There are six different colors. They have to capture all the colors in the sequence of the rainbow. It is a great game that requires the kids to strategize.
They are just finishing their dinner now. After dinner we will have an outdoor activity if the weather is nice. If it rains, we will have an indoor game.
