On our first full day of camp, we woke up to rain. It continued off and on throughout the morning. It wasn't enough to cause us to change any activities, but it was enough for us to definitely need our raincoats. At Camp Taiwan, we say there is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing. As the day progressed, the rain moved out and it ended up as a bright, sunny afternoon.
The campers started their day with their usual routines—brushing teeth, washing faces, and getting dressed—before meeting up with their counselors for a quick tent meeting. These short morning check-ins help everyone get on the same page, go over the day’s schedule, and make sure they’re ready with whatever they need for the activities ahead.
Once breakfast was done, we jumped straight into our daily activity rotations. Here’s how things were scheduled today:
Red and Pink Team: River Tracing, Ecology, Giant Swing
Blue Team: Ecology, Giant Swing, Sports
Green Team: Giant Swing, Sports, Crafts
Orange Team: Cooperative games, Crafts, River Tracing
Gray Team (Teens): Archery, Zipline, Sports, Table-Top Games
You might notice that the younger campers rotate through three activities while the teen group has four. That’s because the youth teams end their afternoon with something we call "Tent Time". This is a time for the campers in smaller groups to really get to know each other. Each tent group connects with their counselor and chooses an activity to do together. Sometimes it’s a small-group activity like a craft or a game, and other times they’ll join up with another tent for something bigger. Today, we had quite a range of activities. The Red Team boys played soccer, some of the campers from Orange Team made postcards and did origami, while the girls from the blue team painted the camp car with washable paint. At least I hope it's washable.
After the final activity period, campers had a chance to shower and get cleaned up before heading to dinner. Now that they’ve eaten, they’re spending a few quiet minutes reflecting on the day and writing in their journals.
Shortly, we will begin our evening program. Tonight’s game is called Survival It is a fast-paced outdoor challenge where campers take on the roles of herbivores, omnivores, or carnivores. Each group starts with a set number of “lives,” and while the herbivores race to complete their missions, they have to stay alert and avoid being caught by the meat-eaters. It’s a mix of strategy, speed, and teamwork
We will sign-off here for tonight. Please be sure to check out the photos of today's activities.
