The pickup went reasonably smoothly this morning, and we arrived at camp right on time. We got the campers unpacked and settled into their tents before spending the rest of the morning with the teams playing name games and ice breakers to get acquainted. We then moved inside for a big spaghetti lunch.
Our days are divided into four 90-minute activity periods, two in the morning and two in the afternoon. We have lunch and a rest period between the morning and afternoon activity periods. During those periods, the teams rotate through a schedule of activities. For example, while the Blue team is doing archery, the Red Team might be climbing. The Blue Team might move on to Climbing, and the Red Team would change to river tracing.
The first two periods today were occupied by getting to camp and our icebreakers. In the afternoon, the teams had the following schedule:
Pink and Red Team (combined): Cooperative Games and Table-top games
Orange Team: River Tracing and Climbing
Blue Team: Sports and Archery
Green Team: Climbing and River Tracing
If you want to know a bit more about these activities, you can find a brief description of some of them here. https://www.camptaiwan.com.tw/activities One activity that is not described on that page is Cooperative Games. These are indoor or outdoor games that are designed to get campers to work together to solve problems. They can be tailored to suit different age groups and group dynamics.
The weather was very nice in the morning, but we had a rain shower at the end of the first afternoon activity period and into the beginning of the second. This caused us to change our schedule around a bit so that some of the activities were in at least partially sheltered spaces.
Speaking of weather, we sent out an email late this afternoon. Hopefully, you received that. Please know that we are keeping a close eye on the weather and will keep your children safe. The storm looks like it will pass over quickly, so we have planned indoor activities for Wednesday, and we have arranged to use Daping Elementary School if needed.
The campers have had a shower and are now warm and dry. They are just sitting down to dinner now. After that, they will spend a bit of quiet time writing in their journals before we have our evening program. Tonight's program is our opening campfire. The counselors will perform some skits, lead some game, sing some traditional campfire songs, and of course, we will roast marshmallows and make s'mores.
That is all for tonight. Please remember to check out the pictures of today's activities.
