Campers woke to another beautiful morning at Camp Taiwan. With the first day behind them, everyone is becoming more comfortable with the daily routine. They are settling into their tents, getting to know their counsellors, and building friendships with the other campers.

The sunny weather continued throughout the day, so we made sure everyone took regular precautions against the heat. Campers were reminded to wear their hats, reapply sunscreen, refill their water bottles, and drink plenty of water between activities.

We continued with our rotation activities today. The teams had the following schedules.

Red Team: Crafts and River Tracing in the morning, and Catapult Games in the afternoon

Orange Team: Started with Giant Swing and Sports, and then had Crafts after lunch

Blue Team: Did Sports and Crafts in the morning and River Tracing in the afternoon

Green Team: Had Catapult Games and Giant Swing before lunch and Sports in the afternoon

Gray Team (our teens) There are 20 teens, so they are divided into two groups. They alternated between Zipline and orienteering in the morning and Giant Ladder and Cooperative games in the afternoon.

Teens have a few activities that are more challenging, as is appropriate for their age. Therefore, we try to include an additional element in some of the activities. When they do the zipline, they not only have to slide down the line. They are given a water balloon or two, which they have to toss down to their teammates who are waiting to catch it. The group that catches the most intact water balloons is the winning team.

For the youth campers, the final activity period of the day was Battleship, our camp-wide Wide Game. They were split into two teams and raced around camp searching for the resources they needed to attack the opposing fleet. Inspired by the classic board game but adapted to be an active outdoor game, the challenge continued until one team successfully located and sank all of its opponent’s ships.

The campers, teens and youth campers alike have a chance to take a rest and a shower after the last daytime activity period. Then we have dinner at 6:30. They are just finishing their dinner now, and will have a few minutes to write in their journals before the night game.

Tonight, the youth campers will play a game called Bigfoot, which involves the campers searching for and challenging the counselors to find and defeat the Bigfoot. It is a fun challenge because there is a secret to winning the game. It is one of my favorite games because you can see the campers working out the solution as the game goes along.

The teen campers will have their own night game. In this one, a counselor sits on a chair in a dark room surrounded by objects that make some noise if not carefully moved. The campers have to take turns sneaking into the circle to steal items without the counselor tagging them with a flashlight.

Tomorrow is phone call day. It is amazing how fast time flies. Please remember to answer unfamiliar calls, so that we can be sure to update you on your child's progress.
