It has been a beautiful sunny day here at camp. Four buses of mostly excited campers rolled in around 9:30. We got them all unpacked and settled into their tents before playing a series of name games and ice-breakers. Campers all know each other now and their counselors have a bit of an idea of their personalities.
After lunch, we started in with our regular activity schedules. All the campers are divided into color teams. The teams will participate in regularly scheduled activities for the first part of the week. After everyone has had a chance to try all the activities, campers will get a chance to sign up for individual activities in the last days of camp.
For today, the campers had the following schedules:
Red team: Giant Swing and Sports
Pink team: Sports and Giant Swing
Green team: cooperative games and river tracing
Purple team: Climbing and archery
Our sports activity this week is kickball, which is a schoolyard classic in every North American school. It follows the same rules as baseball, but, as the name suggests, the team that is up kicks a ball instead of hitting a ball with a bat. You can click here for a description of our core summer camp activities.
Cooperative games are counselor-chosen games that are tailored for the age and abilities of the specific team of campers. They are designed to develop communication and problem solving skills.
A note on weather: We are continuing to monitor the developing storm and have been sending out regular email updates. If you have not been receiving them, please check your spam folder or check that you are using the same email address that you left us in the registration form.
Photos:
Below, you will find a Dropbox link to photos of your campers. You may be wondering how to find pictures of your precious ones. If you don't remember their team color from this morning, start by looking through the "tent pictures" folder. When you find your child notice the color of the lanyard holding their name tag. You can then look in the folder with that team color for further pictures. A color team is made up of 2 to 3 tents. For example in the picture at the top of this post, everyone in front of the tent is wearing a red lanyard, so if one of them is your child, you would look in the "Red Team" folder for more pictures.
A note about photos. We give each team a camera with which to take photos during activities. They try their best to get good photos, but their first priority is managing the campers to be sure everyone is being safe and having fun. It is also important to remember that children act differently when being photographed. Some children turn to the camera and smile for a photo, while others turn away and hide their faces. We will take as many photos as we can and try our best to get photos of everyone's children eventually, but your understanding is appreciated.
