Our first full day of camp began with a gorgeous summer morning. It was much warmer today than yesterday. It can get quite hot during the day, but the evenings cool off beautifully, making it easy to sleep through the night. Those early hours—when campers are just waking and the air is still crisp—always feel like a special, quiet moment before the day begins.
After rolling out of bed, campers took care of their morning routines—brushing teeth, washing up, and getting ready—before gathering for a quick tent meeting with their counselor. These short check‑ins are a chance to see how everyone slept, answer questions, and go over the day’s plan so campers know what’s ahead and what to bring along.
Once breakfast was finished, we launched into our regular rotation of activities. Here’s what today’s schedule looked like:
Red and Pink Team: River Tracing, Ecology, and Giant Swing
Blue Team: Ecology, Giant Swing, and Sports
Green Team: Giant Swing, Sports, and Crafts
Orange Team: Sports, Crafts and River Tracing
Gray Team (Teens): Archery, Zipline, Giant Ladder, and Table-top Games
If you noticed that the younger campers only rotate through three activities while the teens have four, there’s a reason. The youth campers end their day with something called tent time. Unlike rest time, they aren’t required to stay by their tents, and it isn’t just unstructured free time. Instead, each tent group meets with their counselor to choose something to do together—sometimes teaming up with another tent for a bigger activity.
This afternoon, Tent Time was a bit unusual. The teams ended up combining into one game of kickball and one game of a sort of volley ball using a giant beach ball. It wasn't the personal experience we are aiming for with Tent Time, but it was camper led and they all appeared to have a good time.
After wrapping up the last activity period, campers had a chance to clean up and take showers before heading to dinner. They’ve now finished their meal and are spending a little quiet time jotting down thoughts and memories in their journals.
Before long, we’ll kick off tonight’s evening program. The game on schedule is Survival, where campers are split into groups of herbivores, omnivores, and carnivores. Each group starts with a different number of “lives,” and the herbivores work to complete missions while staying out of reach of the other two groups.
That’s all from us for today! A link to today’s photos is included below. If you’re unsure which team your child is in, the tent photos are a good place to start.
