Mandarin Camp Day 4

We continued with our rotation activities this morning. The brown team got to go on the Giant Swing. This is just what it sounds like. A camper is suspended from a cable hanging between two poles. The other campers pull on a rope that lifts them into the air. They can say stop at any time, after which, they have to pull the release to send them swinging. If they go all the way to the top, they are about 30 feet in the air.

After the giant swing they had a lesson in fire making. They get a quick introduction to the fire triangle, and then they get to build their own fire. It is interesting to see them experiment with different configurations. The all succeeded in the end.

The purple team began with sports and then did the Giant Swing. For sports, they played pillow polo. The best way I can describe this is that it is like field hockey, but they use a big foam ball and a stick with a big padded "pillow" on the end. It is lots of fun and a very fast paced game.

In the afternoon, the Brown team had another climbing activity, but this time, instead of climbing the wall, they climbed the Giant Ladder. It consists of a series of horizontal beams four to five feet apart. It is quite difficult to do this activity alone, so two people go at the same time, and they have to find a way to help each other up. As they get higher, the rungs of the ladder get farther apart.

The purple team had another round of archery. This time, they got to qualify for a level one archery sticker. To qualify, they have to identify the parts of the bow and arrow, know the safety rules, and get 15 points with 15 arrows.

We were planning to have a camp-wide water game this afternoon, but because of the storm, we moved inside and played minute-to-win-it. This is a series of short challenges. Each team sends someone up to the front to take part in a game that takes 1-2 minutes. The team gets a point for each challenge they win.

Minute-to-win-it was going to be our evening program, but since we did it in the afternoon, we had to come up with another option. By popular demand, it was decided that we would watch another movie tonight.

That is all for tonight. Please see the link below for photos. By the way, it seems that some people (all people?) are not able to preview the photos in Dropbox 1 by 1. However, if you download the whole folder, you should be able to view the photos.
