The kids woke up bright and early. I little too early, actually, but that is normal for the first day at camp. Usually, by the second day, they are tired enough that they sleep until the bell.
The day started out hot and sunny, but it got progressively cloudier as the day went on. For the two periods, the campers had the Giant Swing and ecology. The Orange team did the Giant Swing first while the Gray team had ecology. Then they switched places for the second period.
The Giant Swing is one of our most popular activities. A camper is suspended from a cable. The other campers pull them up in an arc as high as they want to go. The camper is in control and can say stop at any time. When they are high enough, they pull a release and swing away.
For ecology, the campers split into groups and investigate the many nooks and crannies and pools and streams. They find all kinds of bugs, shrimp, fish etc.
All the campers have a bit of a rest period after lunch. They don't actually need to sleep, but it is a time for them to wind down and stay out of the sun.
In the afternoon, the Orange team went river tracing and the Gray team went climbing. For our second period, we played a whole-camp game called infection. It is a version of tag where the number of people who are "it" or "infected" increases as the game goes on. Unfortunately, the game was interrupted by the rain.
We are expecting more rain tomorrow, so we rearranged the schedule to get all of the outdoor activities done yesterday and today. Tomorrow, the activities are at least partially under cover.
The campers are having dinner now. After dinner, they will have a short time to write in their journals before our evening program. Tonight, we are having our party night. The counselors transform camp into a lively carnival, dressing up and running game booths for the campers. Each camper receives tokens that they can use to try different games, much like they might at a night market or fair. At the end of the night, we turn up the music and the evening turns into a full camp dance party. It is always one of the most energetic nights of the trip, and returning campers often remember it as a highlight of camp.
Below is a link to today's pictures. Tomorrow, I will post a link to the entire folder for the three days, so be sure to check back. Remember, you should download any pictures you wish to keep before you lose access to this blog.
That is all for tonight.
