The kids showed up full of energy and excitement this morning. The weather was beautiful, if a little hot, and they were ready to go. After a brief orientation and a check that everyone had sunscreen, we got right to our first activity.

The campers are grouped by class in this case, and given a team color, either orange or gray. The day is divided into 90 minute activity periods, and the teams rotate through the activities.

The Orange Team had archery in the morning, and and then got to try their hand at climbing in the afternoon. There are several different routes and levels. Today, we set up level one and the cargo net.

The Gray team started with the slack line, which is a great exercise for developing balance. It is a strap stretched between two poles. The campers start with some trust exercises and they have to sit or walk on the strap while their teammates spot them in case they fall. For their second activity, they had river tracing. There is just a small stream running through camp and they follow it for several hundred meters. For many kids it is their first time doing something like this, and it seems that they really enjoyed it.

All the campers will do the same activities before the end of the trip, so if you child missed out on something today, they will be sure to get a turn.

For the last activity period, we played a camp version of capture the flag. Campers have to sneak or race across the line to capture a flag and return it to the other side without getting caught and sent to jail. When all the flags are on one side, that team is the winner. Of course there is more to it than that, including jail-breaks etc., but you will have to ask your camper for more details.

After the afternoon period, they all had a chance to take a shower before coming up for dinner. They are just finishing eating now, and then we will have our evening program. Tonight it is our popular campfire program. We will have some skits, songs, and games, and of course we will end by roasting marshmallows for s'mores.
