It was a bit of a wet morning as three buses of happy campers rolled into camp. We had a quick snack and donned wet-weather gear to go out and have some fun.
Campers got to learn about the ecology around camp by exploring the area around camp and catching as many critters as possible to complete a list. Due to the weather, they caught mostly aquatic animals such as . shrimp, crabs, and frogs. They even discovered dragonfly larvae in the pools around camp.
A round of Frisbee Golf gave the campers a chance to hit specific targets with a frisbee as they navigate their way around the camp. They worked their way through the various tent areas, around the climbing wall, and back to the spider web. It is a good way to introduce the children to camp. These are all places they will become very familiar with in the years to come.
They tried their hand at the lower levels of the climbing wall in a session of bouldering. Bouldering is similar to climbing, but they stay close to the ground and work their way horizontally across the wall. In future camps, they will put on harnesses and climb higher on the wall.
Finally, the campers explored their creative side by making animals and flowers out of colored pipe cleaners. Each child should return with a memento of their first trip to camp.
Unfortunately, the weather didn't improve as the day went on, but we were happy to see that the campers maintained a positive attitude and had a lot of fun. We dried them off as much as possible before sending them home on the bus. I am sure they will have stories for you.
