Session 7, Day 2 — Mountain Air Never Felt So Good!

It rained overnight last night, leaving the mountain air fresh and cool. It was still overcast when the campers woke up this morning. One of the benefits of rainy nights here in the mountains is that things cool off even more than usual and become very comfortable for sleeping. It remained cool and partly cloudy throughout the day today, a welcome change from the hot weather we had earlier in the summer.

We continued with our rotation activities. There was a chance of showers all day today, so raincoats were often part of our attire. We try to schedule the most weather-dependent activities for when the skies are clear, but a little weather doesn't dampen the fun at Camp Taiwan! Today's activities included:

Red Team: Climbing and River Tracing in the morning and Crafts in the afternoon Orange Team: Giant Swing and Sports in the morning and River Tracing in the afternoon

Green Team: Sports and Giant Swing in the morning and Ecology in the afternoon

Everyone got to make the most of the cool, rain-freshened air today with their River Tracing and Ecology activities — a great day to be out exploring nature up close. A note on River Tracing: youth campers do this activity in a very small stream right beside our property, which is not prone to a sudden rise even during a small storm, so walking in the stream in rainy weather is perfectly safe for all participants.

Fortunately, the rain held off for our afternoon Wide Game — Battleship! The campers split into two teams and spread out across camp for this active version of the familiar board game. Instead of sitting around a table, they worked together to search, strategize, and help their team attack the opposing fleet. The goal was simple: be the first team to sink all of the other side's ships.

It was great to watch the campers cooperate throughout the day, encourage their teammates, and throw themselves into each activity with lots of energy.

The excitement continues tonight with our first Night Game of the session. After dinner and journal-time, campers will head out for our counselor hunt! This is a version of hide and seek where several sneaky counselors hide themselves in places around the camp grounds. Campers love this game and the counselors have a great time trying to stay out of sight for as long as possible. It's always a lot of fun watching the campers work together to track everyone down.
