Our second day of camp is already drawing to a close. It is amazing how the time flies. The campers are in good spirits and for the most part seem to be getting along with their teammates and tentmates.
We had a full day of activities today. The various color teams had the following schedules:
Green Team: Ecology, river tracing, sports, and tent time
Orange Team: River tracing, ecology, archery, and tent time
Pink Team: Sports, archery, giant swing, and tent time
Blue Team: Archery, sports, crafts, and tent time
Purple Team (Teen Camp): Zip line, cooperative games, giant ladder, and crafts
For the sports, we are playing either kickball or pillow polo. Both are a lot of fun. Kickball is not popular in Taiwan, but it is a classic game in any North American elementary school. It basically follows the rules of baseball, but instead of hitting a baseball with a bat, players kick a big soft ball. It is perfect for smaller kids. Pillow polo, is a bit like hockey or field hockey, but it is played with a big foam ball and foam covered sticks. We try to choose activities that the campers have probably never played before so that everyone is starting from the same point.
You are likely wondering what tent time is. This is a period where individual tents choose an activity that they want to do together. Similar to rest hour, it allows kids to get to know the people in their tent, but it is a structured activity. One tent went out to catch bugs, some people practiced the Chinese yoyo, some people spent the hour kicking a soccer ball around, and some people chose to make another craft in the dining hall.
The campers have all showered and eaten dinner. They are spending a bit of time writing in their journals, after which they will play their first night game. Tonight we are playing counselor hunt. Counselors hide in various locations around camp while the campers travel in teams to find them.
That is all for tonight. Be sure to check out today's photos.
