It is our last full day here at Camp Taiwan, and we are trying to make the most of it. Red and pink teams started off the day with zip line, which green team did yesterday. Meanwhile, green team got their archery lessons.
After zipline and archery, all the youth campers had their choice of two craft projects, a woven bracelet or a little walking robot made with a small motor and legs made of straws. It is quite a fun little project and it turned out very well. Most campers chose the robot.
In the afternoon, the youth campers got the opportunity to choose their favorite activity from among archery, river tracing, and climbing. For those who chose archery or climbing, they will have the opportunity to test for a level one or possibly level two sticker.
The teens had an action packed morning of ultimate frisbee. Ultimate frisbee is a game where the aim is to get the frisbee into the end-zone of the other team. Anyone holding the frisbee cannot run with it. One of the defining features of ultimate frisbee is that it is self-officiating, so there are no refs. This makes it not only a good sport, but also good practice in conflict resolution. After playing ultimate frisbee, they had their turn on the Giant swing.
In the afternoon, they had their turn at crafts. They made "shrinky dinks." These are a fun and creative project. You start with a sheet of plastic film similar to the type used for laminating. The film is roughed up with fine sandpaper, which makes it so that it can be drawn on with permanent marker. It is them put in an oven for a few minutes causing it to shrink down into a hard piece of plastic about 1/6 the size of the original sheet.
For their last period, all campers will prepare a short skit that will be performed at the closing campfire this evening. At our closing campfire, we encourage campers to reflect on their time at camp and the friendships they have made. It is a nice ending to the week.
That is all for tonight. Remember to check out the photos.
A note on photos. Tomorrow, I will post a blog with a link to the entire week's photos including a video and slideshow of the entire week. Watch it with your kids. It is a great way for them to share their experience at camp with you. The link will be removed from the blog after a few days. However, the link will remain active. Please copy and save the link so that you can review the photos at your convenience.
