Hello from Camp Taiwan to the second group of TAS Grade 5 students! The buses rolled in this morning to a cool, rainy day in the mountains of Wanli. The weather did nothing to slow us down. Campers were excited to be here and ready to start the fun!
A quick note for families new to Camp Taiwan: campers are divided into color teams and rotate through activities together with their team, so each group gets a turn at everything over the course of camp.
With rain in the forecast for the whole day, we rearranged the activity schedule to keep campers as dry and happy as possible. We built the day around our indoor and covered spaces, Crafts and Archery, so that every team spent at least one of their two activity periods out of the rain, with a chance to warm up and dry off. Every team will still get its turn at each activity before camp is over; only the order has changed.
Today's activities included:
Yellow Team: AM – Crafts; PM – Zip Line
Green Team: AM – Zip Line; PM – Archery
Red Team: AM – Crafts; PM – Orienteering
Blue Team: AM – Archery; PM – Crafts
Purple Team: AM – Orienteering; PM – Crafts
Campers soared down the Zip Line, took aim at Archery, found their way around camp with map and compass in Orienteering, and got creative in Crafts. It was a full first day and the campers brought great energy to all their activities.
In between, everyone refueled at lunch with a camp favorite: spaghetti. It was just what campers needed to recharge for the afternoon.
It stayed rainy and cool all day, so we moved our Wide Game indoors. When wide games move inside, we often divide campers by color team and play a series of exciting challenges called Minute to Win It! The high energy and competitive spirit more than made up for the weather, and campers had a blast.

After the game, everyone headed off for a warm shower, followed by a delicious dinner of curry chicken rice and vegetables. It was just the thing after a cool, damp day outdoors.
Day 1 finished up with our Campfire. Rain or not, we had a toasty fire going. Campers sang Little Red Wagon, joined in on the Bear Hunt story, and then gathered around to roast marshmallows over the open flames. What a cozy way to end the first day of camp!
That's a wrap on Day 1! Check back tomorrow to see what Day 2 has in store. See the link below for today's photos.
