Hello from Camp Taiwan to the first group of TAS Grade 5 students! The buses pulled in right on time this morning, and the mountains gave everyone a warm welcome, with clear blue skies and temperatures around 30 degrees. It was a beautiful day to be outdoors. Campers were very excited to be here, and they jumped right into their first day of camp... literally! One shouted "Freedom!" with arms raised as she jumped off the bus first thing. So cool!

With the sun out in full force, counselors made sure everyone kept their hats on and their water bottles close throughout the day. Regular water breaks were taken, and campers did a great job looking out for each other in the heat.

A quick note for families new to Camp Taiwan: campers are divided into color teams and rotate through activities together with their team, so each group gets a turn at everything over the course of camp.

Today's activities included:

Green Team: AM – Zip Line; PM – Ecology

Yellow Team: AM – Crafts; PM – Zip Line

Blue Team: AM – Orienteering; PM – Crafts

Orange Team: AM – Climbing; PM – Orienteering

Brown Team: AM – Archery; PM – Climbing

Campers soared down the Zip Line, scaled the Climbing Wall, took aim at Archery, found their way around camp with map and compass in Orienteering, and explored the natural world up close in Ecology. It was a full first day, with something for everyone.

In between, everyone refueled at lunch with a camp favorite: spaghetti with tomato meat sauce. It was just what campers needed to recharge for the afternoon.

To close out the afternoon, the whole camp came together for our first Wide Game, Battleship! Campers split into two teams and spread out across camp for this active version of the classic board game. Instead of sitting around a table, they worked together to search, strategize, and attack the opposing fleet. The goal was simple: be the first team to sink all of the other side's ships. Showers and dinner followed, and everyone had certainly worked up an appetite!

Day 1 finished up with our Campfire. Counselors led campers through songs and games, and the night ended the best way possible, with everyone toasting marshmallows around the campfire for s'mores. What a sweet way to end the first day of camp!

As usual, there is a link to the Dropbox folder with pictures of the day below.

That's a wrap on Day 1! Stay tuned for more fun on Day 2 tomorrow. See the link below for today's photos.
