Hello from Camp Taiwan to our third and final group of TAS Grade 5 students this fall! After a week’s wait for Typhoon Champi to pass, the buses pulled in this morning and camp was ready to welcome everyone. The mountains greeted campers with rain for most of the morning, but it let up in time for our afternoon activities.
Counselors made sure everyone had their raincoats on during the wet morning, and campers carried on with their activities in good spirits.
A quick note for families new to Camp Taiwan: campers are divided into color teams and rotate through activities together with their team, so each group gets to try everything over the course of camp.
Today’s activities included:
Green Team: AM – Zip Line; PM – Crafts
Orange Team: AM – Crafts; PM – Archery
Blue Team: AM – Archery; PM – Giant Swing
Pink Team: AM – Giant Swing; PM – Ecology
Brown Team: AM – Orienteering; PM – Zip Line
Campers soared down the Zip Line, swung high on the Giant Swing, took aim at Archery, found their way around camp with map and compass in Orienteering, explored the natural world up close in Ecology, and got creative in Crafts. It was a full first day, with something for everyone.
In between, everyone refueled at lunch with spaghetti, hash browns, salad and soup, with fruit for dessert. It was just what campers needed to recharge for the afternoon.

To close out the afternoon, the whole camp came together for our first Wide Game, Battleship! Campers split into two teams and spread out across camp for this active version of the classic board game. Instead of sitting around a table, they worked together to search, strategize and attack the opposing fleet, with the goal of being the first team to sink all of the other side’s ships. Showers and dinner followed, and everyone had certainly worked up an appetite!
Day 1 finished up with our Campfire. Counselors led campers through songs and games, and the night ended the best way possible, with everyone toasting marshmallows around the campfire for s’mores. What a warm, sweet way to end the first day of camp!
That’s a wrap on Day 1! Two big days of adventure are still to come, so stay tuned for Day 2!
