The buses pulled in at 9:28 this morning, and the campers came off ready for camp. Since this is their first overnight stay at Camp Taiwan, the morning took a little extra organizing. We helped everyone find their tents, get settled, pull out what they needed for the day, and then meet back in the dining hall for a short orientation.

By 10:30, they were already heading out for their first activities. Our days are built around 90-minute activity blocks, with each team moving from one activity to the next. Today included one activity period before lunch and three more in the afternoon.

Today’s schedule was:

Yellow Team had archery in the morning and rock climbing and giant swing in the afternoon.

Gray Team started with Giant Swing in the morning and had ecology and orienteering in the afternoon.

Pink Team went exploring in their ecology session first, and followed up with Giant Swing and archery in the afternoon.

During ecology, the campers learned about the water habitats around Camp Taiwan. After a short introduction, they headed out to explore the streams and small pools near camp. They searched carefully through the water and found shrimp, small fish, and even a few frogs and crabs. For many campers, this is one of those activities where curiosity takes over very quickly.

We ended the afternoon with a camp-wide game called Infection. A counselor or two began as the “infected,” while everyone else tried to avoid being tagged. Each time someone was tagged, they joined the infected group and helped chase the remaining players. As the game went on, the safe group became smaller and smaller until only a few campers were left, or the round came to an end.

After activities, everyone returned to the tent area to shower and get cleaned up before dinner. They are finishing dinner now, and afterward they will spend a little time writing in their camp journals. It gives them a chance to slow down, think back over the day, and record a few memories from their first day at camp.

Tonight, we will gather for our campfire program. The counselors have some skits ready, and we will mix in a few games and camp songs before ending the evening with roasted marshmallows and s’mores.

Below is the link to today’s Dropbox photo folder. Once you find your child’s color team folder, most of the pictures of them should be there. This blog will only be available for a limited time, so please download any photos you would like to keep.

Have a good night.
