The campers arrived right on time at 9:20 this morning. It is their first overnight trip to Camp Taiwan, so it took them a little time to get checked into their tents, get out the things they need for the day, and return to the dining hall for a quick orientation. They were full of enthusiasm an eager to get started.
We got them out to their first activity period at 10:30. The day is divided into 90 minute activity periods, and they rotate through the activities in groups. Today, we had 4 periods, one before lunch and 3 after. The teams had the following schedules:
Purple Team: AM Rock climbing - PM Ecology, giant swing
Green Team: AM Ecology – PM Giant swing, Orienteering
Blue Team: Am Giant swing – PM Orienteering, archery
Yellow Team: Orienteering – PM Archery, rock climbing
Pink Team: AM Archery – PM Rock climbing, ecology
For ecology, the topic today was water habitat. The kids get a very brief introduction to some of the different habitat. Then they can explore in all of the little pools and streams around camp to catch shrimp, fish, and the occasional frog.
The last activity was a camp-wide game called infection. One or more players start as “infected.” Everyone else tries to avoid being tagged. When a player is tagged, they become infected too and join the chase. The game continues until there is just one or two people left uninfected, or until time runs out.
We got very lucky with the weather today. We were expecting rain all afternoon, but it held off until after our last game.
After the last period, the campers all returned to their tents to take a shower before dinner. They are just finishing their dinner now. After that, they will spend a few minutes documenting their adventures at camp in their journals before our evening program begins.
Tonight, we will have our campfire. The counselors have a couple of fun skits to perform, and we will play a game or two and sing a few songs. As always, we will end the night by roasting marshmallows for s’mores.
Below is a link to a Dropbox folder with pictures of the day. Once you find your child in a color team folder, most of the pictures of them should be in the same folder. You will have access to this blog for only a limited time, so please download any pictures you wish to keep.
That is all for tonight.
