In case you missed my email earlier, let me start off by saying that we suffered no damage or problems from today's earthquake. In fact there was almost no shaking at all here. I was outside when the alarm went off on my phone. I was prepared for the shaking, but I didn't feel it at all, although a couple of counselors said they felt mild shaking.
We have had a day of on again and off again rain, but we were mostly able to fit in our regular activities between the periods of rain. Although we would prefer to have sunny weather every day, it rains a lot in Taiwan, so we make the most of it. We go forward with activities if there is just light rain, but we do move indoors if there is very heavy rain or any risk of lightning. Safety is always our biggest concern.
It was dry enough during our first activity period for everyone to finish their activities. Green team had pond play, The orange team had climbing, and the blue team had cooperative games.
We had a bit of rain and a threat of lightning (no actual lightning) in the second period, which delayed some of the activities. It didn't last long however, so they were able to go back out for the remainder of the activity period. Green team had archery, and Blue Team had cooperative games. Orange team had pond play.
In the afternoon, we started our free-choice activities. This is when campers get to choose their favorite activities for a second time or choose an activity that we didn't offer during the rotation. You will have to look through the folders of activities to find pictures of your campers. There was a bit of rain again in the afternoon, but it was only light rain and no lightning, so we were able to go ahead with the activities.
Our final activity was a water wide game. This is a game that the whole camp plays together and involves the campers, who are carrying "gold", sneaking past counselors who are armed with water guns. The risk was mitigated a bit by the fact that most of the kids were already partly wet from the rain, but it was still fun. They ended the afternoon with a big water-balloon fight.
After the water game, we shuffled all the kids off to the showers to get clean, warm, and dry. Tonight is our Party Night. We will play carnival style games and have shaved ice. It ends with a big dance party.
Good night from Camp Taiwan. Tomorrow will be a busy day.
