It was cool and overcast when the campers woke up this morning. The nights here in the mountains are generally very comfortable, and good for sleeping. It remained cool and partly cloudy throughout the day. This is a comfortable change from the hot weather we had in the earlier sessions.
We continued with our rotation activities. There is a pretty high chance of showers in the afternoon throughout the week, so we have adjusted our schedule to keep the most weather-dependent activities in the morning. Today, the teams did the following:
Red Team: Crafts and River Tracing in the morning and Catapult Games in the afternoon
Orange Team: Giant Swing and Sports in the morning and Crafts in the afternoon
Blue Team: Sports and Crafts in the morning and River Tracing in the afternoon
The activity for Sports this week is Capture the Castle, which is a variation of capture the flag to fit our medieval theme. The field is divided in half. The campers have a number of bandanas in a hula hoop at the back of their area. There is also an area designated as the dungeon. The other team has to race across the field, grab a bandana from the hula hoop, and return to their side without getting tagged. If the attacker gets tagged, they are escorted to the dungeon. They stay there until a member of their team rescues them. The first team to capture all of the other team's flags is the winning team.
we had a bit of rain in the afternoon, but Crafts and Catapult games are both indoors, and the light rain didn't affect river tracing since the kids are wet anyway, so it did not affect our activities. (Our river is very small and is not prone to a sudden rise to a small storm.)
Fortunately, the rain had stopped in time for our afternoon wide-game, Battleship! The campers split into two teams and spread out across camp for this active version of the familiar board game. Instead of sitting around a table, they worked together to search, strategize, and help their team attack the opposing fleet. The goal was simple: be the first team to sink all of the other side’s ships.
It was great to watch the campers cooperate throughout the day, encourage their teammates, and throw themselves into each activity with lots of energy.
The excitement continues tonight with our first Night Game of the session. After dinner and journal-time, campers will head out for a game called Bigfoot. The campers work together against the counselors. One counselor begins as “Bigfoot,” and the campers spread out trying to chase and catch them. The counselors can secretly switch who is Bigfoot during the game, making it harder for the campers to know whom they need to catch.
When a camper manages to catch Bigfoot, the camper and counselor compare playing cards. If the camper has the higher card, the campers win. If the counselor’s card is higher, Bigfoot escapes and the chase continues.
The game usually runs for several rounds. The counselors tend to have the advantage at first, but as the campers figure out how to work together and improve their strategy, they eventually have a chance to defeat Bigfoot.

Have a good night.
