Session 2 Day 3: Light Rain

It was a rainy day here at camp, but the showers weren’t strong enough to stop the fun. As we’ve mentioned before, even when there’s lightning and heavy rain in Taipei, we often just get a gentle drizzle here at camp. We had to adjust the schedule a little, but all our activities were able to continue as planned.

The teams rotated through their activities today as follows:

  • Red Team: River Tracing, STEM, Capture the Flag

  • Pink Team: STEM, Crafts, Climbing

  • Blue Team: Sports, Giant Swing, Archery

  • Green Team: Table-Top Games, STEM, Zipline

For today’s craft project, the campers made adorable little aliens woven from beads. This ties in perfectly with our space and science (or science fiction) theme for the week.

The Gray Team (teens) split into two groups today. Half spent the morning at the beach enjoying beach games and kayaking. The other half stayed at camp and tackled the Giant Ladder and Orienteering. If you’re not familiar with the Giant Ladder, it’s a fantastic team-building activity where campers work together to climb a series of wide, spaced-out ladder rungs. Success requires communication, cooperation, and a little creative problem-solving. You can read more about this and other activities on our website: https://www.camptaiwan.com.tw/activities.

For the last period of the day, the youth campers played a wide game called Rainbow Tag. In Rainbow Tag, each camper wears a bandana representing one of the colors of the rainbow. The goal is to tag campers wearing the next color in the rainbow sequence. When a player successfully tags someone, they bring them back to their base and earn a mark of that color on their arm. The captured camper is then released and the captor has to catch someone of the next color. Campers work their way through the colors, and the first player to collect all the colors of the rainbow wins the game. It is a lot of fun because after the first few minutes, you don't know who is your friend and who is trying to catch you.

Now that the day's activities are done, the campers have taken their showers and are sitting down to dinner. Afterward, they’ll have a bit of time to write in their journals before we wrap up the evening with one of their favorite traditions—movie night. By the third day of camp, everyone appreciates a chance to relax a little. We set up a cozy movie theater atmosphere complete with popcorn. Tonight’s film is Mars Needs Moms, a quirky animated story about a boy whose mom is kidnapped by Martians and his adventure to rescue her.

That’s all for tonight’s update. Don’t forget to check out today’s photos at the Dropbox link below. We hope that these pictures allow you to appreciate all that your children are doing.
