Session 1 Day 3: Home Away From Home

The campers are really settling into the routine and are quite at home with camp life now. They’re no longer waking up at sunrise, making noise and disturbing their counselors. In fact, during our morning counselor meeting, the only sound coming from the camper tents is snoring. Sometimes, getting them out of bed takes a bit of effort.

Last night’s movie was a huge success. By the end of the film, the campers were cheering every time the girls in the movie pulled off a trick to help bring their parents back together. It was a great time for everyone.

We continued with our regular activity rotations for the first three periods. Here’s what today’s schedule looked like:

  • Red Team: Ecology, Zipline, Archery

  • Pink Team: Zipline, Archery, Giant Swing

  • Blue Team: Archery, Giant Swing, Table-top games

  • Green Team: Giant Swing, Table-top games, Ecology

  • Orange Team: Table-top games, Ecology, Zipline

For the final activity period, we played a wide game. Like the night games, wide games are big activities where all the campers (sometimes including the teens, sometimes not) play together. Today’s wide game was Hunt and Chase. In this game, campers are divided into teams and given a colored bandana to hang from their pocket. The goal is to grab bandanas from players on other teams. If a camper catches someone—for example, a red team player catches someone from the green team—both players return to the red team's base, where the captured player swaps their bandana for a red one. The game keeps going until only one color remains.

The Gray Team (teens) had a full day today. In the morning, they took a trip to the beach for kayaking and some beach games. They came back just in time for lunch, looking tired but happy.

In the afternoon, they played ultimate frisbee for their sports period. Ultimate frisbee is a fast-paced team sport where players pass a flying disc to teammates, working together to score points by catching the disc in the opposing team's end zone. It’s a great way to build teamwork and have some fun competition.

For crafts, the teens made small snake keychains by weaving different colored cords together.

Tonight, we’ll wrap up the day with our Party Night. During this event, the counselors dress up and run a variety of carnival-style games, similar to what you might see at an American carnival or a Taiwanese night market. Campers are given tokens to spend on the games and can try their luck at the different booths. Toward the end of the night, we turn down the lights and turn up the music, transforming the area into a lively dance party. This is one of our most popular events and something returning campers often look forward to.

That’s all for tonight. Don’t forget to check out the pictures at the link below.
