KAS Grade 5 Move-Up Trip Day 2

It was another beautiful day here at Camp Taiwan. It was a little warmer than yesterday, but still not really hot--just a nice spring day.

Some of the campers woke up early and played Uno or chatted in their tent for a little while until it was time to actually get up. The regular wake-up bell rings at 7:30 and we head up to breakfast at 8:00. At 9:00, we started our regular daily rotation of activities.

As I mentioned yesterday, we have two 90-minute activity periods in the morning and two 90 minute periods in the afternoon. In the middle of the day, we have about an hour of rest time. The teams had the following schedules today:

  • Green team had zip-line in and archery in the morning, and climbing in the afternoon.

  • Purple team had Frisbee golf and zip-line in the morning, and giant swing in the afternoon.

  • Pink team had climbing an tie-dye in the morning and Frisbee golf in the afternoon.

If you are counting, you will have noticed that is only three periods. For the fourth period, the campers played a whole-camp game, where everyone plays together. The game today was called Happy Happy Joy Joy and is a camp favorite.

Campers are split into two teams, each defending their side of the field. At the back of each team's territory lies a hula hoop "base," where a Pikachu (or another Pokémon) stands guard. The objective is simple but thrilling: sneak across the dividing line, reach the opposing team’s base, and capture their Pikachu. Then, race back to your own base without getting caught!

But it’s not just offense—defense is key! Players can tag intruders who enter their side of the field. Once tagged, the opponent must squat in place until rescued by a teammate. A rescue happens when a fellow team member reaches them, links arms or holds hands, and walks them back across the dividing line while singing “Happy Happy Joy Joy.” As long as they're singing and connected, they’re untouchable.

That’s the magic of Happy Happy Joy Joy—a fast-paced game of strategy, teamwork, and just the right amount of silliness.

Like yesterday, after a day of running around, they campers were ready for a shower and a short rest before dinner at 6 pm. They are just finishing their dinner now.

Some of the campers seem a bit tired after their early rise and a full day of activities, so we are going to have a special movie night tonight. We will spread carpets out on the floor and serve popcorn. It gives them a chance to unwind and recharge a little bit. I believe they will sleep soundly tonight.

By the way, I know that some of the parents were concerned about their children missing home or not having a phone for the weekend. I am happy to report that there has been absolutely no visible homesickness or cell phone withdrawal. This group is about as self-confident and independent as a group can get.
