KAS Grade 5 Day 1

We picked the campers up at the train station today, and everyone arrived excited and ready to go. The pickup went smoothly, and after getting everyone organized, we headed out to camp. The drive took a little longer than usual due to Tomb Sweeping Day traffic, but overall it wasn’t too bad and everyone handled it well.

We arrived at camp just in time to get the campers settled into their tents before lunch. After lunch, the teams had their first two activity periods. We have two 90-minute activity periods in the morning and two in the afternoon. The campers are divided into 3 teams, and they will rotate through the activities in turns. The teams will stay the same for the duration of the trip, so once you find your child's pictures in the correct folder today, they will be (mostly) in that folder in the upcoming days as well.

Here’s what the afternoon looked like for the 3 teams:

• Orange Team: Archery and Cooperative Games

• Green Team: Cooperative Games and Slackline

• Brown Team: Slackline and Archery

Slackline is an activity where a strap is set up between two posts, and the campers practice balancing as they walk or move along it. It can be a bit challenging at first, but it’s always fun to see how quickly they improve.

Cooperative games are designed to help campers work together and communicate. In one game, campers pass a ping pong ball from one pair to another using a flat mat, trying to move it all the way down the line into a basket without dropping it. In another activity, mats are arranged on the ground in a grid, and the group has to figure out the correct path through by trial and error, remembering each successful step along the way. These activities are a good way to get everyone thinking and working as a team early in the week.

After the activity periods, the campers had some time to clean up and take showers. They’re finishing up dinner now. The weather has been quite good so far. It has been cloudy and a bit misty at times, but we didn't get any real rain except for a brief period after our last activity period.

After dinner, we’ll head into our evening program with a campfire. We’ll sing some songs, play a few games, and finish the night by roasting marshmallows and making s’mores.

It’s been a good start to the session, and we’re looking forward to the days ahead.

All the children seem to adjusting well and having a good time. They have a lot of energy, especially the boys, but they have had a big day, so hopefully they will sleep well tonight.
