Today, we started our Free-Choice activities. The campers get to choose to do their favorite activity a second time or try one of several new activities. They are given 5 choices and they rank them from 1 to 5 in order of preference. For the most part, they get their top three choices.

Today, the options were:

Shrimping: The campers can explore the various pools and streams around camp and catch crabs, crayfish, shrimp, etc. This was a popular option this time because they didn't have an ecology sections.

Zipline: The zipline is not everyone's thing. For many kids, it is one of the highlights of camp, but for others, it is just a little too much.

Archery 2: They get to have a second round of archery with more advanced training and they get to take a test to get a special archery sticker.

Climbing 2: For the first round of climbing, they only do level one and the cargo net. In the second round, they get to try level 2, which has a challenging overhang. For campers that are enthusiastic, but still not ready for the level 2 wall, the level one wall is still open.

River tracing was the final option by popular demand. It was another hot day, so the cool water was a nice respite from the heat.

The teens had a fun morning. They learned a bit of outdoor cooking by making bamboo rice. They had to collect wood and start a fire, cut pieces of bamboo, and prepare the rice mixture. They then packed it into the bamboo and roasted it over their fire.

In the afternoon, they all had a sports period together. They played dodgeball, and other games.

This evening, we will have our closing campfire. We have a ceremony where we light candles, and have a period of reflection and sing a couple of traditional camp songs. We then have skits or shows performed by the campers. Each team performs a skit, song, or dance. We choose the best act for the coveted Oscar award.

All the campers spent the last afternoon period in their teams preparing for their performances. I am really looking forward to the show.

Below is a link to today's photos. There are a couple of things to note for tomorrow.

  1. Tomorrow, we will post a link for the photos for the entire week, so you can review and download any you missed. There will also be a slideshow and video of the week's highlights.

  2. We will arrive at the Taipei Gymnasium around 3 pm for the camper drop-off. If you are driving, please park in one of the nearby parking garages and leave the yellow line clear for our buses. Also, please let the counselors get the campers and their luggage off to the side before taking your children. It is very important that the counselors see and document who is taking each child.

Thank you,

The Camp Taiwan Team
